ABOUT THE CRASH

crash [krash], noun: the group identification name for rhinos, much like a family

Rhinos moving together at full speed are known as a crash. Even when they’re just hanging around enjoying the watershed, they’re called a crash because of their potential.

Crash Facts

All the things you’ll want to know about the Crash to help you determine if we’re the right program for you.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CRASH?

The Baltimore County Crash was created to provide hockey players in Baltimore County and City (and surrounding areas) with a local summer program in which to develop their skills and prepare for their fall/winter seasons. No more driving an hour or more each way to get some off-season ice time.

WHO RUNS THE BALTIMORE COUNTY CRASH?

The Baltimore County Crash is run by Foundations Hockey and the Foundations Hockey staff of instructors. We work in close partnership with the Reisterstown Sportsplex and other local supporters of youth ice hockey.

WHO ARE THE CRASH COACHES?

Crash coaches are Foundations Hockey staff members with experience coaching, playing, and managing youth programs at a number of different levels from rec to college. You can find information on all Foundations Hockey staff on the homepage of our website.

WHO IS THE CRASH FOR?

In short, the Crash is for anybody that wants to play hockey in the spring and summer. We hold tryouts to ensure that players are placed accordingly and that the Crash is a good fit for them but we encourage everyone to try out to see where they stand.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE CRASH PROGRAM?

We built the Crash to be an all-inclusive program that bundles a lot of things into a single fee. That includes team practices, weekly skills sessions, scrimmages, tournaments, uniform, and our annual apparel kit.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN CRASH PRICING?

Everything! Crash pricing is all-inclusive so we won’t ask you for a few bucks here and there throughout the season. In addition to ice time, your uniforms, apparel, gear bag, tournament fees, coaches’ salaries, etc. are paid for. All you need to pay during the season is travel when we’re on the road.

HOW MANY GAMES WILL WE PLAY WITH THE CRASH?

Number of games will vary. The Crash is primarily a skill-development program so there are a lot more practices and skills sessions than games. We will play local scrimmages as opponent availability permits and all teams get tournament play which includes the Reisterstown Rampage at the end of the season for our 6U and 8U teams. 10U through 16U play two tournaments per summer. 18U will play one as a half-season team only.

HOW DO HALF-SEASON OPTIONS WORK?

We know that summers can get pretty busy. So we have half-season options for most Crash teams. First half options run through the first tournament for each team. Second half options start right after the first tournament and continue through the end of the summer. Pricing is figured accordingly.

DO YOU OFFER FINANCIAL AID?

We do not specifically have a financial aid or scholarships package, but we work with families to ensure that hockey is affordable for everyone who wants to play. That may include an extended payment plan or discounts based on need. Please contact us if you need to discuss a special financial arrangement. Please note that Crash fees are typically spread out across three invoices throughout the season.

WHAT LEVEL DO CRASH TEAMS PLAY?

The level of play for Crash teams will depend on registration and tryouts. When we play locally, we typically skate at a higher level than when we play in other markets like New England. We have some flexibility on a tournament-by-tournament and scrimmage-by-scrimmage basis.

AM I EXPERIENCED ENOUGH FOR THE CRASH?

If you’ve played hockey at least at a rec level, then there is probably a Crash team that is right for you. We encourage you to come to tryouts and see how it goes. For 6U, anyone who has completed a Learn To Play or above level program is a great fit.

HOW MUCH ICE TIME WILL I GET?

A LOT! Practices are 1 to 2 nights per week. All teams will average nights/every two weeks. In addition, all Crash players are automatically enrolled in 16 weeks of Foundations Hockey weekly skills sessions (Spring, Summer, and Preseason). This is on top of tournaments and games. Practices are typically one hour or 45 minutes in length depending on age.

WILL THE CRASH HELP ME IMPROVE MY SKILLS?

Most likely, yes. If you’re willing to put in the work, our skills-first focus will help you improve. We also ensure that players moving from 8U to 10U are prepared for full-ice and that players moving from 12U to 14U are ready for checking in the fall.

DO YOU HAVE GIRLS ONLY TEAMS?

We may. Foundations Hockey and the Crash put a strong emphasis on growing girls’ hockey in our region with the most experienced female staff anywhere around. If there are enough girls registered at a particular age group, we will add a girls-only team. Otherwise, everything will be co-ed but all Crash girls get a 6-week Girls Skills package as part of their enrollment.

DOES THE CRASH OFFER ADULT HOCKEY PROGRAMS?

We’re considering it. If you’re interested, let us know. We’re never afraid to try something new.

DOES THE CRASH HAVE A FALL/WINTER TEAM?

No. The Crash is a spring/summer program. In the fall and winter, Foundations Hockey offers plenty of skills programs that complement regular season practices but we don’t typically have a Crash offering during that time.

WHAT AGE GROUPING WILL I PLAY IN?

All players skate in the age group that they will play in the coming fall/winter season as determined by USA Hockey.

Depending on registration and tryout outcomes, we may juggle some teams around. In the past, we have combined 14/16U or 16/18U. That always depends on our numbers and our experience level.

WHAT’S THE 18U TEAM ALL ABOUT?

In 2024, we did our first 18U team. Among the things we learned is that 18U players have a lot going on with proms, graduations, senior week trips, and heading off to college. So we’ve adapted the program to accommodate. We’ll do a first-half-only 18U program with a local (with 2.5 hours drive) tournament so you get a final summer of youth hockey.

WHERE DOES THE CRASH PLAY?

All Baltimore County Crash ice time is contracted at the Reisterstown Sportsplex. Scrimmages and tournaments may be elsewhere, but we do not practice or hold skills session at other rinks.

WHAT IS THE REISTERSTOWN RAMPAGE JAMBOREE?

The Rampage is our annual end-of-season jamboree for 6U and 8U teams. We make a big day out of it with 12-15 participating teams, food trucks, vendors, live music, and whatever else we can come up with. It’s a ton of fun and all of our 6U/8U Crash players get to participate in it.

WHAT IF I DON’T MAKE A CRASH TEAM?

Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it. But we make it a point to help every local player reach their full hockey potential. If you’re not ready for a Crash team, we’ll give you some ideas of what Foundations Hockey programs to participate in to hone your skills a bit more.

WHAT NIGHTS OF THE WEEK ARE PRACTICES AND SKILLS?

Practice times will vary but we typically have Crash team practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Skills sessions are on Tuesdays (Girls Skills on Thursdays). We have no practices on the weekends.
